How target-size compression works
The browser first tries to reduce encoding quality while keeping your image dimensions. If the selected target is still too small, it gradually reduces the dimensions as well. This helps meet common upload limits while preserving as much detail as possible.
Important limitations
- A target is a best-effort limit. Some detailed photos cannot reach very small sizes without substantial quality loss.
- PNG is lossless; quality controls do not apply to PNG output. Smaller PNG files may require smaller dimensions.
- Transparent pixels are preserved in WebP and PNG. They become white when exporting to JPG.
- Choose another tool for HEIC, GIF, SVG or animated images.
